A Prayer to Show Mercy to Others | Your Daily Prayer

Mercy does not come naturally when we feel wounded. When others criticize us, judge us unfairly, or speak hurtful words against us, our first instinct is often to defend ourselves or hold tightly to resentment. Yet Jesus calls His followers to something radically different: mercy.

In Luke 6:35-36, Jesus says:
“But love your enemies, and do good… Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

These words challenge every part of our human nature. Loving those who hurt us feels impossible without God’s help. Forgiving others before they apologize can feel unfair. Yet the gospel itself is built upon undeserved mercy. Every believer stands forgiven before God not because we earned grace, but because Christ freely gave it.

The reality is this: if God only loved us after we became perfect, none of us would have hope. Instead, He loved us while we were still sinners. His kindness led us toward repentance.

Showing mercy does not mean ignoring sin, pretending hurt doesn’t exist, or allowing unhealthy behavior to continue unchecked. Healthy boundaries matter. Accountability matters. But bitterness cannot take root in a heart surrendered to Christ.

When we hold onto unforgiveness, it slowly hardens us. Mercy, however, softens us into the likeness of Jesus.

God’s Spirit gives believers the strength to do what feels impossible:

  • to pray for those who mistreat us
  • to bless instead of curse
  • to forgive instead of retaliate
  • to walk in humility instead of pride

Mercy reflects the heart of the Father.

Tonight, ask God to help you release resentment and trust Him as the righteous Judge. His mercy toward us becomes the model for how we treat others.
