Luke 10:33-37
Sermon: 2004 How to Be a Good Friend

Pray Over This

“‘But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, “Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.” So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?’ And he said, ‘He who showed mercy on him.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’”
Luke 10:33-37

Ponder This

What was wrong with these men who passed by the man who was beaten on the road to Jericho? Their problem was not primarily gross iniquity but gross indifference. Rather than being a part of the solution, they became a part of the problem. They were not the ones who beat the man. They were not the ones who robbed the man. Their error is not in the fact that they did something, it is that they did nothing! They simply passed him by.

Many in the Church also pass by those who have needs and hurts. Jesus has called us to compassionate involvement. The Good Samaritan who ministered to this man is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the way Jesus cares for those whom others have cast aside.

This man had genuine compassion, not false compassion. This is not mere sentimentality. The word compassion comes from two words, com, meaning, “with,” and passion, which means, “to feel deeply.” A person who has compassion sees people through the eyes of Christ. Compassion means with suffering, with feeling; the Bible says the Good Samaritan saw the man and was with him. The problem with so many of us is we just don’t see. We don’t look! We’re so busy. We pay no attention. Needy people are all around us. Will you see?

  • What are some ways you are indifferent to the hurt of others? What are some reasons we justify this?
  • How has Jesus shown us compassion? When has compassion led you to serve someone who’s in a tough place?

Practice This

Look for a person or group of people to serve and show the compassion and love of Christ.
