I Am Called to Freedom

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.” Galatians 5:13a

Chains of shame, fear, addictions, and regrets wound tightly around my fragile heart. I was a Christian already. My Bible told me I’d been forgiven, that Jesus sacrificed Himself for me, so I could spend an eternity with Him.

But I couldn’t escape my past.

My mistakes and faults replayed in my thoughts daily. The devil whispered often, “Sure, God may have forgiven you, but He’ll never forget the sins you’ve committed.”

I felt like I would forever have to make up for the terrible things I’d done. Work harder for my career. Volunteer more at church. Say yes to all the “asks” at my children’s school. And while I tried to compensate for my sin-stains, I lugged around a suitcase full of shame-bricks. Images flashed in my mind of these bricks, laid during my pre-Christ life, over and over, threatening to enslave me though I was already set free.  

It took many prayers and reading and re-reading and studying my Bible to understand that my salvation means Christ no longer sees my past when He looks at me. Isaiah 43:25 says, “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, for My own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

It’s unbelievable but true. For His sake, He wipes our soul clean and forgets our past transgressions. You see, Jesus released the lock holding me to that heavy suitcase of regrets when I accepted Him as my Savior. I just had to release that suitcase.

When we belong to Jesus, He breaks the chains holding us to our past. Sister, don’t grip tightly to what Christ has freed you from.
