Seasons Change

Just like the weather, our lives have seasons. When we’re in the middle of a season of our lives, it can feel like what we’re facing is just going to keep happening forever. We can forget that the season will change. In other words, if things at work or in our family life are going great, we can’t see any way that things could stop being that way. And if we’re facing a challenge, we often can’t see how it could possibly be resolved. 

However, past experience teaches us that things change. The seasons in our lives will continue to cycle through, just like they always have. Life is filled with ups and downs—and these changes can be very difficult to see coming. For example, I’ve spoken to parents whose children seemed to be obviously headed down a rough path in life, but then they made a dramatic change and worked to make wise and responsible choices. I’ve also spoken to parents who watched their responsible kids change quickly and start making some seriously destructive choices. I’ve spoken to people who were caught completely off guard by their partner’s decision to start divorce proceedings or cheat on them. I’ve also spoken to couples who were absolutely convinced that they were headed toward divorce that have found ways to reconnect and strengthen their relationship. 

Wherever you find yourself right now, just know that there will most likely be some changes coming around the corner. I don’t know what they will be in my own life, and I’m willing to go out on a limb here and say that you don’t know what might be coming your way, either. I don’t say this in an effort to cause anxiety or worry but just as a reminder that part of life is navigating change. The seasons in nature are a good reminder that we go through seasons in life. Whether you’re in a period of great joy or great pain right now, know that you won’t be in this place forever. Simply knowing that can be really helpful when we get unexpected news that threatens to throw us off balance. Finding ways to adjust and go with the seasons of life will help us and our families to win more often at home.
