By a 60-40 margin, Alabama voters approved a state constitutional amendment saying unborn babies have a right to life.

The amendment also would guarantee that “the constitution of this state does not protect the right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.”

Life News reports the vote came despite Planned Parenthood spending $1.5 million to defeat it.

The amendment would still allow exceptions for abortion when the mother’s life is at stake.

The Alabama Supreme Court had previously ruled that under the state’s constitution, a woman has a “right” to abortion, making it nearly impossible for lawmakers to pass even moderate abortion regulations.
