With reports circulating that President-elect Joe Biden plans to cancel the Keystone pipeline expansion project upon taking office, some Canadian leaders are stepping up to urge restraint.

According to the Associated Press, some Canadian officials want to make the case for the project to the new president. As the AP reports, "Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said Monday he will seek legal damages if reports are true that Biden plans to scrap the pipeline on his first day upon taking office." Kenney urged the Democratic leader to talk to officials there about the project.

Although they had plenty of other disagreements, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was very supportive when President Donald Trump revived the Keystone XL project in 2017.

The expansion of the pipeline, which would transport oil from Canada to the United States, has been a controversial topic of discussion for years. According to the AP, the pipeline's expansion faced resistance from the Obama administration with the President Obama officially rejecting it in 2015.

If Biden puts an end to the expansion project early on in his new administration, it could be one of the many quick reversals he makes from the Trump administration.

It remains to be seen how this decision will affect the relationship between the United States and Canada.
