MOVIA™ Air lidar sensor and MOVIA™ Air Plus deliver lightweight airborne sensing and real-time 3D environmental awareness for autonomous aerial systems; live demonstration planned at JIFX

REMOND, WA AND MONTEREY, CA / ACCESS Newswire / August 5, 2026 / MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS), a leader in advanced perception solutions for industrial, security and defense, and automotive applications, today announced the launch of its MOVIA™ Air product family, purpose-built for autonomous aerial systems.

The portfolio includes MOVIA™ Air, a lightweight lidar sensor optimized specifically for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and MOVIA™ Air Plus, which combines the MOVIA™ Air sensor with edge processing and video imaging. On its own, MOVIA Air runs MicroVision's embedded algorithms to support autonomous landing, obstacle avoidance, and object tracking. MOVIA Air Plus combines an edge processor and optional camera to extend these capabilities to real-time 3D environmental awareness, generating realistic world maps in real time, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) navigation.

Together, the products expand MicroVision's portfolio beyond ground-based autonomy and into aerospace, defense, and commercial drone applications, advancing the company's Lidar 2.0 strategy of delivering scalable, software-enabled perception solutions across multiple high-growth markets.

"Autonomous aerial systems require more than imagery. They require the ability to understand their surroundings and make decisions in real time," said Glen DeVos, Chief Executive Officer of MicroVision. "The MOVIA Air product family gives customers the flexibility to deploy a lightweight lidar sensor alone or a lightweight lidar solution that comes complete with the addition of a perception solution with onboard intelligence. As demand grows for autonomous aerial logistics, defense applications and intelligent inspection, we believe MOVIA Air positions MicroVision to address an exciting and rapidly expanding market."

Built from MicroVision's proven MOVIA™ lidar platform, MOVIA Air has been redesigned specifically for unmanned aircraft by reducing weight by approximately 50 percent compared to the industrial version while maintaining the sensing performance customers rely on today. The lightweight design enables seamless integration into UAVs, commercial drones, and other autonomous aerial platforms without compromising payload capacity or flight endurance.

For customers requiring higher levels of autonomy, MOVIA Air Plus integrates MicroVision's perception software with an edge processor and optional camera to transform lidar data into real-time environmental intelligence directly onboard the aircraft.

Unlike conventional camera-based systems or workflows that require aircraft recovery and hours of post-processing before data can be analyzed, MOVIA Air Plus delivers live three-dimensional environmental understanding during flight. The platform supports real-time 3D mapping, sensor fusion, SLAM, terrain understanding, and autonomous docking, enabling operators to make informed decisions while missions are underway.

Key capabilities include:

MOVIA™ Air

  • Approximately 50% lower weight than the standard MOVIA platform for drone-optimized integration.

  • High-performance lidar sensing for UAVs and autonomous aerial systems.

  • Reliable day and night operation across varying environmental conditions.

  • Optimized for integration into commercial, industrial, and defense drone platforms.

  • Enables object detection, object tracking, autonomous following, autonomous landing, and environmental measurement for advanced aerial operations.

MOVIA™ Air Plus

  • Includes all capabilities of MOVIA Air, plus integrated onboard perception software.

  • Delivers real-time 3D mapping and continuous environmental awareness.

  • Combines lidar and camera sensor fusion for richer scene understanding.

  • Edge AI processing enables low-latency perception and real-time decision-making directly onboard the aircraft.

  • Supports advanced autonomous capabilities including autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, terrain understanding, autonomous following, object detection, precision landing, and SLAM.

The MOVIA Air product family is designed to support a broad range of aerial autonomy applications, including defense and military reconnaissance, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), infrastructure inspection, emergency response, security operations, autonomous package delivery, precision agriculture, and industrial drone missions.

Evaluations In Progress

Before the official product launch, MicroVision began actively collaborating with several pre-launch partners across industrial, defense, and autonomous aerial applications, including a major industrial drone delivery company and a provider of advanced resource exploration, with these partners in various stages of evaluation of the MOVIA Air product family.

"One of the biggest advantages of lidar is the ability to perceive the world independent of lighting conditions," added DeVos. "Whether navigating around power lines, identifying safe landing zones, mapping disaster areas or supporting autonomous defense missions, MOVIA Air provides the sensing foundation, while MOVIA Air Plus delivers the real-time intelligence needed when every second matters."

First Public Demonstrations

MicroVision will publicly demonstrate MOVIA Air Plus during the upcoming Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) event, showcasing live perception and real-time world mapping in operational environments. JIFX is a Navy-led program that brings together government, military, industry, and academia to test emerging technologies in realistic operational environments. JIFX places technologies in front of actual operators, warfighters, evaluators, researchers, and acquisition stakeholders from across the U.S. military, allowing direct interaction and feedback during the development process rather than years later in a formal program.

The company also plans to demonstrate MOVIA Air integrated into additional aerial platforms and, later this year, showcase how data collected from MOVIA Air can be combined with data from its long-range IRIS™ lidar sensors to create a unified, real-time understanding of an operating environment from both aerial and ground perspectives.

The launch of the MOVIA Air product family represents another milestone in MicroVision's strategy to leverage its proven lidar technology and software across multiple vertical markets, delivering purpose-built perception platforms optimized for the unique requirements of industrial automation, security and defense, commercial vehicles, aerospace, and autonomous systems.

MOVIA Air Product Webinar

MicroVision will host a MOVIA Air product webinar during the week of August 17, providing customers, partners, and other interested stakeholders with a deeper look at both MOVIA Air and MOVIA Air Plus, their technical capabilities, integration options, and target applications. The webinar will include product demonstrations, technical deep dives, and perspectives from MicroVision leaders on the evolving role of lidar-enabled perception in autonomous aerial systems. The registration for this webinar can be found here.
