BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — For years, dozens of retirees have gathered outside Argentina’s Congress each Wednesday to demand higher pensions. Since President Javier Milei took office in December 2023, their weekly protest has come to symbolize the toll of his austerity plan. The government says the cuts are needed to curb inflation, but retirees say they’re among the hardest hit, watching their incomes erode.

Among the retirees who show up week after week, many remain active across Buenos Aires, teaching tango, cooking for neighbors, dancing, or cheering at soccer games, while struggling to get by.
