AKA urges Senate to prioritize transparency, public testimony, and science-based regulation

WASHINGTON, DC, March 20, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- The American Kratom Association (AKA) today expressed formal opposition to Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall’s procedural move to transition the bipartisan Kratom Consumer Protection Act into a total ban on kratom. The AKA asserts this action bypassed standard committee review and limited the opportunity for public testimony from Michigan consumers.

In a rare procedural sequence, Speaker Hall moved the legislation to the House floor for an immediate vote on a full kratom ban. This move replaces a previously proposed regulatory framework intended to oversee the sale and manufacturing of kratom products in the state.

“We believe this process overlooked essential scientific testimony,” said Mac Haddow, Senior Fellow on Public Policy for the American Kratom Association. “Michigan residents were not afforded a full hearing on a regulatory approach that has been adopted in more than 20 other states.”

The original Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) aimed to establish several safeguards, including:

  • Prohibiting the sale of adulterated or chemically altered products.
  • Requiring clear labeling of alkaloid content.
  • Establishing a minimum purchase age.
  • Setting manufacturing purity standards.

The AKA argues that a total ban may lead consumers toward unregulated markets. This legislative shift follows a public campaign by Patti Wheeler, whose documentary attributes her son’s death to kratom — a claim the AKA maintains is not supported by conclusive toxicological data.

“It is concerning to see policy shaped by personal narratives rather than broader public health data,” Haddow added. “Many Michigan residents utilize kratom for personal wellness and harm reduction.”

Advocates like Michigan resident Melody Woolf have highlighted the distinction between natural kratom and synthetic compounds. Woolf previously represented consumers at a federal briefing where health officials, including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., recommended scheduling chemically manipulated 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products, rather than natural kratom leaf.

“The distinction is vital,” Haddow emphasized. “The AKA believes the primary public health risk stems from synthetic compounds marketed as kratom. A total ban on the natural leaf does not address the availability of these synthetic alternatives.”

The AKA cited the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) regarding kratom’s potential role in harm reduction. The organization concludes that the most effective path forward is a regulated market that removes dangerous synthetics while ensuring consumer access to labeled, natural products.

American Kratom Association (AKA) is a consumer-based, nonprofit organization, focused on furthering the latest science as guidance for kratom public policy. AKA works to give a voice to millions of Americans by fighting to protect their rights to access safe and natural kratom.
