Mask up or pay up; cities impose fines for disobeying orders

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Law enforcement in West Hollywood will issue a $300 ticket to anyone who refuses to wear a mask in the city as officials statewide scramble to limit rising coronavirus cases ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend. The decision by West Hollywood city officials in one of California’s most liberal enclaves ramps up enforcement of a statewide mask-wearing rule that previously had been imposed without penalties. Similar moves have been taken in Santa Monica and further north in Monterey. Heading into the Fourth of July holiday, health officials nationwide begged people to stay home and warned that big crowds could fuel the outbreak.
