Tulsa uses big plays from Jones, Lawyer to rally for 23-17 win over Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Trequan Jones ran for 125 yards and scored twice, Tulsa took the lead for good early in the third quarter and went the Golden Hurricane went on to beat Sam Houston 23-17 on Saturday.

Tristan Lawyer's lone carry resulted in a 56-yard touchdown run almost five minutes into the second half and put Tulsa (2-0) ahead for good — 16-14 — following a missed point-after attempt.

Later in the third, Jones ran for an 81-yard touchdown to extend the margin to 23-14 with 7:22 left in the quarter.

Sam Houston (0-2) took leads of 7-0 and 14-7 when Landyn Locke threw a 39-yard touchdown to Chris Reed three minutes into the game, and then a 94-yard catch-and-run to Jerrian Parker Jr. with 6:48 left before halftime.

Parker emerged untouched out of the backfield, ran untouched in the middle of the field, caught it at the 20 and sprinted the distance down the left seam from there.

Locke threw for 316 yards for the Bearkats.

Jones collected his 125 rushing yards on nine carries for Tulsa.

Up next

Tulsa hosts East Texas A&M next Saturday.

Sam Houston State hosts FCS Nicholls next Saturday.
