U.S. Mint Produces Last Penny As 1-Cent Coin Phased Out

The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia is producing its final circulating penny, ending more than two centuries of 1-cent coin production. President Donald Trump ordered the phase-out after the cost to make each penny rose to nearly four cents, making the coin’s value largely obsolete. Pennies have been minted in Philadelphia since 1793, and billions remain in circulation, though they are rarely essential for everyday transactions. The Treasury Department says discontinuing the coin will save about $56 million per year in materials. Many Americans have a nostalgic attachment to the copper-plated coins, seeing them as lucky or collectible, but the century-old penny is now officially history.

Government Shutdown Nearing An End

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history appears to be close to ending. About 1.25 million federal workers have missed at least one or two paychecks, and thousands of flights have been canceled. Government contracts have slowed, and some food aid recipients have seen their benefits interrupted. The House could vote as early as today on legislation that would officially reopen the government. Officials warn, however, that it could take time for flights, federal services, and payrolls to return to normal.

Trump threatens legal action against BBC over edited speech

President Donald Trump is threatening to sue the BBC, claiming the broadcaster misrepresented his remarks ahead of the January 6, 2021, protests at the U.S. Capitol. Trump told Fox News he has an “obligation” to take legal action against the British network. The controversy centers on a documentary aired before the 2024 election in which Trump’s call for peaceful protest was allegedly edited out. The BBC’s top executive and head of news resigned Sunday amid criticism of the edits. BBC Chairman Samir Shah apologized for the “error of judgment” and acknowledged the edits created the impression of inciting violence. The network, known for its impartiality, is facing backlash from multiple political perspectives over the controversial edits.

Dems Get Advantage With Utah Congressional Map

A Utah judge has rejected a new congressional map drawn by Republican lawmakers. Judge Dianna Gibson adopted an alternate proposal giving Democrats a strong shot at flipping a seat in the 2026 midterm elections. Gibson ruled Monday that the map approved by the Legislature last month unduly favors Republicans and disfavors Democrats. She ultimately selected a map drawn by voting rights groups that keeps Democratic-heavy Salt Lake County almost entirely within one district. Republicans hold all four of Utah’s U.S. House seats. The newly approved map gives Democrats a much stronger chance to flip a seat. The state last had a Democrat in Congress in early 2021.

U.S. Aircraft Carrier Move Escalates Venezuela Tensions

The Gerald Ford aircraft carrier strike group has moved into the Latin America region, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, dramatically escalating a military buildup that has deepened tensions with Venezuela. President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of the Ford last month, adding to the eight warships, a nuclear submarine and F-35 aircraft already in the Caribbean. The Ford, which was commissioned in 2017, is the United States' newest aircraft carrier and the world's largest, with more than 5,000 sailors aboard. The Pentagon confirmed the arrival, which was first reported by Reuters, saying in a statement it would help "disrupt narcotics trafficking and degrade and dismantle Transnational Criminal Organizations." Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has repeatedly alleged that the U.S. buildup is designed to drive him from power. Washington in August doubled its reward for information leading to Maduro's arrest to $50 million, accusing him of links to drug trafficking and criminal groups that Maduro denies. The U.S. military has carried out at least 19 strikes so far against suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coasts of Latin America, killing at least 76 people. When the U.S. first announced the Ford's deployment, Maduro warned that if the U.S. ever intervened in the country, "millions of men and women with rifles would march across the country." Venezuela is deploying weapons, including decades-old Russian-made equipment, and is planning to mount a guerrilla-style resistance or sow chaos in the event of a U.S. air or ground attack, according to sources with knowledge of the efforts and planning documents seen by Reuters. Tensions between the United States and Venezuela's neighbor, Colombia, have also spiked in recent weeks, with Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro trading barbs. Trump has called Petro an "illegal drug leader" and imposed sanctions on him. The leftist Colombian president has accused the U.S. of committing "murder" with its strikes. A Reuters visual investigation found the U.S. military is upgrading a long-abandoned former Cold War naval base in the Caribbean, suggesting preparations for sustained operations that could help support possible actions inside Venezuela. The deployment of the Ford, however, is a far more overt demonstration of U.S. military readiness. With only 11 aircraft carriers in the U.S. military's arsenal, they are a scarce resource and their schedules are usually set well in advance -- making the Trump administration's surprise announcement last month unusual. The Ford carrier, which includes a nuclear reactor, can hold more than 75 military aircraft, including fighter aircraft like the F-18 Super Hornet jets and the E-2 Hawkeye, which can act as an early warning system. The Ford also includes sophisticated radars that can help control air traffic and navigation. The supporting ships, such as the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser Normandy, Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers Thomas Hudner, Ramage, Carney, and Roosevelt, include surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
