ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 27, 2026--

Building on more than a decade of defining excellence at the highest level of the game, the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) returns in May 2026 with a star-studded roster of elite competitors, a $2 million prize purse and the highly anticipated GCT Finals hosted in the U.S. Chess Capital at the Saint Louis Chess Club.

As the most established and prestigious global chess circuit, the GCT continues to set the standard for elite competition — uniting the world’s top players across classical, rapid and blitz formats in a season-long battle that rewards consistency, fighting spirit and championship resolve. This year’s field is among the deepest and most competitive in Tour history, led by Reigning World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju and 2025 GCT Champion Fabiano Caruana.

“The GCT has always represented the highest level of professional chess,” said Garry Kasparov, legendary World Champion and GCT co-founder. “What distinguishes the GCT is not only the strength of the field, but the integrity, tradition and global vision behind it. This season’s lineup reflects exactly why the Tour remains the ultimate stage for elite players and fans of the game.”

Full tour participants will compete in both classical tournaments and two of three rapid & blitz events. Wildcard players for all events to be announced at a later date.

The Grand Chess Tour continues to offer one of the most significant prize funds – U.S. $2 million. Individual event purses to include:

  • $200,000 per Rapid & Blitz event (three total)
  • $350,000 per Classical event (two total)
  • $450,000 additional prize purse at the GCT Finals
  • $250,000 in bonus allocation ($125,000 at each regular season Classic event)

At season’s end, the top four players will advance to the GCT Finals, hosted at the newly expanded Saint Louis Chess Club, where the GCT’s ultimate champion will be crowned in knockout matches — reinforcing Saint Louis’s status as one of the leading epicenters of elite chess in the world.

The prize fund is provided by Super Foundation and the Saint Louis Chess Club, whose long-standing partnership has helped establish the GCT as the most respected and enduring tour in the modern chess era.

“The GCT continues to be the benchmark for elite competition,” said Augusta Dragic, President of the Super Foundation. “With millions of fans worldwide, the Tour showcases chess at its very best — uniting strategy, intensity, and global storytelling in a way that only the GCT delivers.”

“Hosting the GCT Finals in Saint Louis underscores our city’s role as the U.S. Chess Capital,” said Rex Sinquefield, co-founder of the Saint Louis Chess Club. “This Tour doesn’t just bring the world’s best players together — it builds legacy, inspires future generations, and strengthens the global chess community.”

The 2026 season marks the return of former U.S. Champion GM Alex Onischuk as Deputy Executive Director of the GCT, reinforcing the Tour’s commitment to player-first leadership and competitive integrity. International Arbiter Ignatius Leong (Singapore) appointed as the Chief Arbiter to lead the most experienced team of international arbiters.

“The strength of the GCT has always come from thoughtful stewardship and a clear competitive vision,” said Michael Khodarkovsky, Executive Director of the GCT. “As the professional chess landscape continues to evolve, the GCT remains focused on what matters most — providing players with a trusted, elite platform and delivering fans a season-long narrative that rewards excellence, consistency, and true championship performance. Bringing the Finals back to Saint Louis underscores that commitment.”
