Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is returning to a New York courtroom for a pretrial hearing in the federal drug trafficking case against him. Maduro has pleaded not guilty to the charges and continues to argue that he was illegally taken into U.S. custody. His attorneys are challenging both the circumstances surrounding his detention and the government's authority to prosecute him. Federal prosecutors accuse Maduro of participating in a yearslong conspiracy to send large quantities of cocaine into the United States. No trial date has been set as the court considers the defense’s legal challenges and other pretrial matters.

President Donald Trump will attend the dignified transfer of four U.S. service members killed in the Middle East when their remains arrive Wednesday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. According to the White House, the transfer will include two Army soldiers killed in Iranian missile and drone attacks on a U.S. base in Jordan, along with a third service member believed to have died in the same attack after previously being listed as missing. The remains of another soldier, who was killed in Iraq while attempting to disarm an Iranian drone, will also be returned during the ceremony. The dignified transfer marks the formal return of the fallen service members to the United States, where their families and military leaders will honor their service and sacrifice.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the city does not have the authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking Tuesday, Mamdani said any effort to enforce the International Criminal Court warrant issued for Netanyahu would have to be carried out by the federal government, not the New York Police Department. The comments represent a shift from remarks Mamdani made earlier this month and during his mayoral campaign, when he said he wanted the city's legal department to explore whether the NYPD could arrest Netanyahu if he came to New York. Israel's ambassador to the United Nations criticized Mamdani's earlier comments, saying the mayor should stop calling for Netanyahu's arrest. Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September for the U.N. General Assembly.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers Tuesday that the U.S. war against Iran has cost an estimated $37.5 billion so far, as he defended the administration's request for a $95 billion military funding package during a contentious Senate hearing. The spending proposal includes funding for military operations, along with aid for farmers and election-related priorities backed by the White House. Hegseth's testimony came as the Pentagon announced that more than 100 U.S. service members have been injured since early July and that the number of Americans killed in the conflict continues to climb. The hearing featured heated exchanges and protests as lawmakers debated the growing human and financial costs of the war.

The U.S. military carried out an 11th consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran early Wednesday, targeting aircraft hangars and drone storage sites as fighting continued across the region. U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes followed President Donald Trump's announcement that military operations against Iran would intensify. The attacks come after diplomatic efforts to revive an interim ceasefire collapsed. Before the latest barrage, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni traveled to Pakistan, which has served as a key mediator in the conflict. However, there was no indication that new negotiations were underway. President Trump said the United States has no interest in renewed talks as the conflict continues, with both sides battling for control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
