Family Seeks Answers In Fatal ICE Shooting

The family of a man fatally shot by an ICE officer in Houston is calling for the release of all body camera and surveillance video from the incident. Federal officials say Lorenzo Salgado Araujo tried to ram an officer with his vehicle after a traffic stop Tuesday morning. His family disputes that account and says they want the public to see the evidence for themselves. Relatives describe Salgado Araujo as a hardworking father who had lived in the United States for decades and was pursuing legal work authorization. Civil rights groups are also calling for transparency in the investigation.

Judge Clears Release Of Carroll Award

A federal judge has ruled that E. Jean Carroll can collect the nearly $5.8 million that has been held in escrow since a jury found President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming her. The decision follows the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to overturn the 2023 civil verdict, allowing the judgment to move forward. Trump's attorneys sought to block the release of the funds but were unsuccessful. Trump has continued to deny Carroll's allegations, maintains he did not know her, and has argued the case was politically motivated.

Trump Approves Patriot Production For Ukraine

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense systems under license, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Kyiv's defense capabilities. Speaking at the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump praised alliance members for increasing defense spending and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Prosecutors Play Roommate's Statements In Kirk Case

Prosecutors in the Charlie Kirk murder case plan to play edited audio recordings of police interviews with the defendant's roommate during a preliminary hearing in Utah. Defense attorneys for Tyler Robinson argued the recordings should not be played publicly, saying jurors could interpret the statements as a confession and jeopardize Robinson's right to a fair trial. Robinson is charged with aggravated murder in the September 2025 killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. He has not entered a plea, and the hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.

Platner Suspends Senate Campaign, Forcing Democrats To Pivot In Crucial Maine Race

WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner of Maine suspended his campaign on Wednesday following a string of controversies, including an accusation of sexual assault, that have plunged one of the most competitive races in the 2026 midterm elections into turmoil. The suspension by the former U.S. Marine and oysterman, in a video posted on social media, is likely to complicate Democrats' efforts to win control of the Senate in the November 3 elections. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority. The race in Maine, considered one of the Democrats' best pickup opportunities, will now focus on how the Democrats go about choosing a replacement candidate to take on incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. Many Democrats had already questioned Platner's fitness for office before Politico reported on Monday that a woman accused him of forcing her to have sex with him nearly ⁠five years ago. CNN followed with a report that the woman accused him of entering her home without permission and raping her while he was intoxicated. Platner flatly denied the allegations. On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that a former girlfriend of Platner's said he repeatedly removed condoms during sex without her consent, an allegation that Platner's campaign called "categorically false and politically motivated." Democratic leaders and Senator Bernie Sanders have called on Platner to withdraw from the race. Prominent members of Congress rescinded their endorsements of him and leaders of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said they would withhold funding from the race if Platner remained on the ballot. The departure may signal the end of Platner's rapid political rise, as he tapped into a current of progressive politics by promoting a universal national healthcare system and working-class themes while directing criticism at billionaires and concentrated wealth. Platner has faced a series of other controversies, including offensive Reddit posts he apologized for and a now-covered tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol. The Wall Street Journal reported that Platner's wife, Amy Gertner, had told the campaign her husband sent sexually explicit texts to several women early in their marriage. In a video message, Gertner said the two had a "great marriage." Platner has acknowledged poor behavior in the past and asked for forgiveness, saying he struggled with alcohol abuse and mental health issues after military deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
