CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Gaining freedom from the heat will be a challenge this Independence Day in the eastern U.S., and it's already starting ahead of the holiday weekend. The National Weather Service says dangerous, record-breaking heat will continue across much of the central and eastern United States on Thursday and Friday and will continue along the East Coast through the weekend. With humidity making it feel hotter than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, sweat will be dampening spirits at many celebrations marking 250 years of American independence. In Philadelphia, officials shortened the route of a Thursday morning parade, canceled an afternoon all-American Block Party, and pushed back the start times of an evening picnic and concert at Independence Mall.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling says he will retire July 15 after three years leading the nation's second-largest police force. Snelling oversaw the department during a period that included declining murder and shooting numbers, the Democratic National Convention and federal immigration enforcement operations in the city. Mayor Brandon Johnson thanked Snelling for his leadership and said Assistant Superintendent Fred Waller will serve as interim superintendent while the city searches for a permanent replacement.

The Trump administration has filed federal lawsuits against California and Virginia, challenging newly enacted state laws that restrict the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms. The Justice Department argues the laws violate the Second Amendment and unlawfully limit Americans' constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Virginia's law bans the sale and manufacture of certain semiautomatic firearms, while California's measure prohibits gun dealers from selling some handguns that can be easily converted to fully automatic weapons. Attorneys general in both states say they intend to vigorously defend the laws in court.

A dangerous heat wave is spreading across the Northeast just ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, prompting heat warnings and advisories for millions of people. Forecasters say temperatures in cities including New York, Boston and Philadelphia could climb into the 90s, with some areas expected to reach or exceed 100 degrees. Combined with high humidity, heat index values will make conditions feel even hotter. Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day and check on vulnerable neighbors as the extreme heat is expected to last through much of the holiday weekend.

Election Results Send Warning To Establishment

The FBI says it has ruled out some ransom notes received in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie as extortion attempts but is continuing to examine others that investigators believe could be credible. Authorities have not disclosed how many ransom notes have been received, saying only that there have been several. The Pima County Sheriff's Department, which is also investigating the case, declined to comment on the notes. Nancy Guthrie, the mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for five months as investigators continue to search for answers.
