The Trump administration has named David Venturella as the next acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, replacing current acting director Todd Lyons at the end of the month. Venturella previously worked as an executive with GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private prison and immigration detention companies. Before returning to ICE, he served in leadership roles overseeing detention contracts and corporate development. The leadership change comes as the Trump administration continues expanding immigration detention operations and pushing forward with its mass deportation agenda. ICE has played a central role in those efforts, ramping up arrests, detention capacity, and enforcement operations nationwide. Venturella’s appointment is already drawing scrutiny from immigration advocates and critics who point to his ties to the private prison industry. Supporters of the move say his long experience inside ICE and the detention system makes him qualified to lead the agency during a period of major expansion.

The company operating the cruise ship linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak says it expects to decide by the end of the week whether the vessel will continue its planned summer cruise schedule. The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius had been scheduled to depart later this month for Arctic cruises throughout the summer, according to the company’s website. Health officials say three passengers have died in the outbreak, including a Dutch couple believed to have first been exposed to hantavirus during a trip through South America. In total, 11 cases have now been reported worldwide, with nine of those cases confirmed. Officials continue monitoring former passengers as the investigation into the outbreak continues.

The Trump administration is temporarily blocking new home health and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare as part of a broader effort to crack down on healthcare fraud. Officials say the pause will give the federal government time to review billions of dollars in Medicare spending and strengthen oversight rules for providers entering the system. The move is tied to Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud task force, which argues fraudulent operators have been able to quickly establish businesses and bill the Medicare program under current regulations. The administration says the temporary freeze is intended to prevent abuse while federal agencies develop additional safeguards and guidance for hospice and home healthcare providers.

The World Health Organization says the hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship has now grown to 11 reported cases worldwide, including three deaths. Health officials say a French woman infected during the outbreak is critically ill and is being treated with an artificial lung at a hospital in Paris. Spanish authorities also confirmed a new hantavirus case Tuesday, with that patient now in quarantine at a military hospital. Meanwhile, 15 Americans remain under medical observation at a quarantine unit in Nebraska as officials continue monitoring for possible infections tied to the outbreak.

President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping as tensions over trade, inflation, and global conflicts continue to weigh on relations between the world’s two largest economies. Trade is expected to dominate discussions during the meeting, with the White House pushing for the creation of a new “Board of Trade” aimed at easing tensions and preventing additional trade disputes between the United States and China. The proposed framework would focus on increasing trade in non-sensitive goods while maintaining restrictions and export controls on technologies tied to national security concerns. A small plane crashed Tuesday in Bahamian waters about 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) off the coast of Florida and all 10 people aboard were rescued, officials in the Bahamas said. The pilot had declared an emergency and then communication with the aircraft was lost, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority in the Bahamas said in a media post. The U.S. Coast Guard and multiple Bahamian agencies were involved in the ensuring search and rescue. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a C-27 aircraft to look for the downed Beechcraft 300 King Air turboprop plane. The rescued passengers were brought in for medical evaluations, the Coast Guard said. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
