First Responders Conducting Rescues In Texas Floods

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — First responders in Texas are rescuing people trapped in high waters as another round of dangerous flooding has struck southern parts of the state. The storms and flooding that began Tuesday are being blamed for two deaths, while more than 200 people have been rescued by emergency officials in boats and helicopters over the past several days. Authorities in several areas including Sutton, Crockett and Zavala counties west of San Antonio say water rescues are ongoing Friday. A flash flood emergency was declared for Sonora in Sutton County. Floodwaters have begun receding in some of the hardest hit areas including Uvalde and cleanup efforts are underway.

U.S. Destroys Iran's Surveillance Tower Used To Target Ships In Hormuz

On X, U.S. Central Command posted on Friday: "On July 16, U.S. forces successfully destroyed the Chah Bahar Shahid Kalantari Port surveillance tower, part of a maritime surveillance network along Iran’s Gulf of Oman coastline used for decades by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to track and target commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The destruction of the tower directly degrades IRGC’s ability to coordinate attacks on innocent civilian crew members. Furthermore, the strike protects freedom of navigation in regional waters for all vessels, except for ships attempting to violate the ongoing U.S. naval blockade against Iran." Two Plead Not Guilty In Alleged Plot To Attack Trump UFC Event

Two men have pleaded not guilty to federal conspiracy charges in connection with an alleged plot to attack President Donald Trump's UFC event on the White House lawn. Tycen Proper, 19, of Ohio, and Chandler Scaggs, 21, of West Virginia, entered their pleas Thursday in federal court in Columbus, Ohio. Their trial is scheduled to begin September 14. Prosecutors allege the two men were among eight people involved in a plot to use drones and snipers to attack the UFC Freedom 250 event, which was held in June as part of celebrations marking the nation's 250th anniversary. The defendants face charges including conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to commit murder on federal government property and of a federal government official.

Geese Remains Found On Wreckage Of Deadly NYC Helicopter Crash

Federal investigators say remains of several geese were found on the wreckage of a sightseeing helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River last year, killing six people. A report released by the National Transportation Safety Board says evidence from the wreckage and witness accounts suggest the helicopter may have struck multiple birds before plunging into the river on April 10, 2025. The crash killed the pilot and five passengers. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as they work to determine its cause.

National Guard Deployment In Washington Extended Through Trump’s Term

President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., has been extended through the end of his current term. The Pentagon says the mission will continue until January 20, 2029, unless the president ends it earlier. Trump initially ordered the deployment in August 2025 as part of his administration’s effort to address crime in the nation’s capital. The administration says crime has fallen since the deployment began, although local officials maintain that crime rates were already declining before troops arrived. National Guard members have assisted law enforcement with arrests, responded to medical emergencies and participated in cleanup and beautification projects across the city.

ICE Hiring Practices Face New Scrutiny

Immigration and Customs Enforcement's rapid expansion is facing new scrutiny following a deadly shooting involving an ICE officer in Maine. The agency has hired thousands of new officers as the Trump administration works to increase immigration arrests and deportations nationwide. The expansion, however, has raised questions about the agency's hiring practices and whether recruits are receiving adequate background checks before beginning work. The concerns intensified following reports that the ICE officer involved in the Maine shooting had a history of mental health issues, according to relatives who spoke with The Associated Press. ICE says its hiring process includes rigorous vetting and that many of its new recruits have law enforcement or military experience. However, reports that some officers may have started working before their full background investigations were completed have fueled additional questions about the speed of the agency's hiring push.

U.S. Expands Strikes On Iran, Targets Bridges And Key Port

The United States has expanded its military campaign against Iran, launching new strikes on bridges and a key Iranian port as fighting intensifies across the Middle East. The latest attacks included strikes that collapsed a tower at the port, as President Donald Trump pressures Tehran to loosen its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Iran responded with new missile attacks targeting U.S.-allied nations in the region, including Qatar. The renewed fighting follows the collapse of an interim ceasefire reached last month, raising concerns that the conflict could once again escalate into a broader regional war.
