Blanche Faces Tough Questions At Senate Confirmation Hearing

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faced bipartisan scrutiny during his Senate confirmation hearing as lawmakers questioned him about a proposed $1.776 billion fund intended to compensate allies of President Donald Trump and a related tax immunity agreement. Blanche told senators the proposed "Anti-Weaponization Fund" is no longer moving forward, but several lawmakers expressed concern that the administration has not formally committed to abandoning the plan in writing. Some Republican senators, including Sen. John Cornyn, said they want written assurances that the proposal cannot be revived in the future. The hearing comes as Blanche seeks Senate confirmation to remain the nation's top law enforcement official.

Coast Guard Ends Search After San Francisco Boat Sinking

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for three people missing after a boat capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. One person died and 16 others were rescued after the vessel overturned during what family members said was a memorial service to scatter a loved one's ashes. A dog aboard the boat also died. Authorities say the cabin cruiser capsized in swells of up to five feet near Alcatraz, prompting a large-scale search involving Coast Guard vessels and aircraft. The cause of the sinking remains under investigation.

New York Times Challenges Reporter Subpoenas

The New York Times is asking a federal court to block Justice Department subpoenas issued to reporters who covered security concerns involving the new Air Force One. The newspaper argues the subpoenas violate constitutional protections for a free press by attempting to compel journalists to testify before a federal grand jury about confidential sources. The filing sets the stage for a significant legal battle over press freedom and the government's authority to force reporters to reveal information gathered during newsgathering. The subpoenas were issued as part of a federal leak investigation involving reporting on security issues surrounding the new presidential aircraft.

Hegseth Announces Testosterone Screening Program For Troops

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced a new military screening program aimed at identifying testosterone deficiency among U.S. service members. Under the policy, troops age 30 and older will be tested annually as part of their required medical screenings. Service members under 30 may volunteer to be tested. Hegseth says the program is intended to help troops maintain their health and perform at their highest level. The announcement comes as some Trump administration officials push for broader access to testosterone replacement therapy, though medical experts continue to debate when testing and treatment are appropriate.

White House Security Upgrades Under Review

Federal officials are reviewing a series of Trump administration proposals aimed at strengthening security around the White House. The plans include installing a permanent fence around Lafayette Park, located directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, as well as redesigning an underground visitor screening center. The projects are being considered by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, which oversees the design of federal buildings and public spaces in Washington. Officials say the proposed upgrades would replace temporary security measures with permanent infrastructure designed to improve safety for visitors and the White House complex.

Trump Backs Continued ICE Traffic Stops

President Donald Trump says Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers should continue making vehicle stops despite recent deadly encounters involving federal immigration agents. His comments appear to conflict with a new administration directive suspending most ICE vehicle stops following two fatal shootings in just over a week. Homeland Security officials say immigration arrests and deportations will continue, though exceptions to the pause are expected for criminal warrants and certain joint law enforcement operations. The debate comes as ICE enforcement tactics face growing criticism after three people died during encounters with federal officers in one week.

House Rejects Proposal To Cut U.S. Aid To Israel

The House has rejected a proposal to eliminate $3.3 billion in U.S. assistance to Israel, but the vote exposed a growing divide among Democrats over continued support for the country. The amendment failed by a vote of 104-314. It was introduced by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a longtime opponent of foreign aid. More than half of House Democrats voted in favor of cutting the funding, while nearly all Republicans joined the remaining Democrats in opposing the proposal. The vote comes amid continued debate in Congress over U.S. policy toward Israel following the war in Gaza and growing calls from some Democratic lawmakers to place limits on American assistance.

U.S. Launches Fresh Strikes On Iran

The United States has launched a new wave of strikes against Iran, targeting coastal defense systems and missile sites after reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports. The renewed attacks mark another escalation in the conflict, with the U.S. expanding its operations as it seeks to prevent Iranian ships from violating the blockade and threatening commercial traffic in the region. Iranian officials responded by threatening to halt additional energy exports across the Middle East, describing the fighting with the United States as an “existential war.” The escalation has renewed concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and natural gas supplies, and further weakened hopes of reviving an interim agreement to end the war.
