Defense attorneys for the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk continued their effort Friday to cast doubt on the prosecution's evidence as a preliminary hearing neared its conclusion. Lawyers for Tyler Robinson are expected to call a final witness before a Utah judge decides whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence to send the aggravated murder case to trial. Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in September 2025. He surrendered to authorities the following day and has not entered a plea.

A federal appeals court has upheld Illinois' ban on semiautomatic rifles, large-capacity magazines, and certain firearm accessories, ruling the law does not violate the Second Amendment. The law was enacted in 2023 following the deadly Highland Park Fourth of July parade shooting that killed seven people and injured dozens more. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals said the restrictions are consistent with the nation's longstanding tradition of firearm regulation. Gun rights groups say they plan to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, which is already preparing to hear challenges involving similar state and local firearm bans.

The United States and Iran exchanged a new round of military strikes overnight, raising fresh concerns that the fragile ceasefire aimed at ending the conflict could collapse. U.S. forces carried out airstrikes inside Iran, while Tehran responded by launching missiles toward Gulf countries. The escalation came hours after President Donald Trump declared the interim ceasefire effectively over and warned of further U.S. action if attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz continue. Meanwhile, Iran held funeral ceremonies for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the opening phase of the conflict, following several days of nationwide mourning.

Marine Corps veteran Victor Marx has won the Republican primary for Colorado governor, narrowly defeating establishment-backed state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer in a closely watched race. Marx, founder of All Things Possible Ministries, will now face Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser in the November general election. The Republican nominee celebrated the victory as proof that voters wanted a political outsider to lead the party. Republicans have not won Colorado's governor's race in more than 20 years, making the general election an uphill battle in a state that has increasingly favored Democrats.

Nearly two weeks after Venezuela's devastating twin earthquakes, survivors are now facing a growing public health emergency as relief efforts continue. Health officials warn that overcrowded shelters, poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and disrupted medical care are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. More than 17,000 people remain displaced, while humanitarian organizations are working to provide food, medical supplies, and clean water to affected communities. The death toll has climbed to nearly 3,900, making the disaster one of the deadliest in the country's history.
