U.S. & Iran Separately Announce Sending Delegations To Qatar This Week

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United States and Iran have separately announced they are sending delegations to Qatar this week, though Tehran insists it has not agreed to meet with the U.S. “at any level.” The announcements Monday came after weekend attacks in the Persian Gulf challenged efforts to negotiate an end to the war. U.S. President Donald Trump has tried to preserve a fragile interim deal as hostilities mounted in recent days in the Strait of Hormuz. After four days of trading strikes, both sides appeared to pause their attacks Monday. A spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry says its delegation traveling to Qatar plans to discuss terms of the deal without U.S. involvement.

Luigi Mangione’s Federal Trial In CEO's Killing Postponed Until January

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has delayed Luigi Mangione’s federal trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. It will now begin in January, instead of this fall. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett said Monday that she was postponing the federal trial so Mangione’s lawyers can focus on his state murder trial in the Dec. 4, 2024, killing, The state trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 8. Garrett said jury selection in the federal case will begin on Jan. 5, instead of Oct. 13. Opening statements and testimony will begin on Jan. 25, instead of Nov. 4.

JetBlue Pilot Reports Hitting Drone As Plane Approached JFK Airport

A JetBlue pilot reported hitting a drone as he approached JFK International Airport to land in New York Monday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident that happened as the plane passed through 3,000 feet (914 meters) around 7:15 a.m. as it was crossing the coastline. The plane landed safely without any additional help, and no damage was found when the plane was inspected afterwards. “We collided with a drone back there in the turn,” the pilot told an air traffic controller, according to ATC.com. “It hit us right above the cockpit.” The airline said all the passengers deplaned normally, and then the plane was removed from service so it could be inspected. JetBlue said the airline “found no damage or evidence of a collision.” The Airbus A321 plane was flying overnight into New York from Las Vegas. “Safety is JetBlue’s first priority, and we will assist with any relevant investigations,” the airline said in a statement. Drones are generally allowed to fly below 400 feet (122 meters), but the FAA does restrict airspace around airports and public events like the World Cup because of safety concerns. Law enforcement officials say that even when a drone pilot is just trying to shoot an overhead video, their presence distracts officers from dealing with other potential threats. Incident reports collected by the FAA show that drones are a growing threat around airports. The risk of a collision is most acute near airports because that is where the flight paths of drones and airplanes most overlap. The FAA said that more than 100 drone sightings are reported near airports every month that the agency works with law enforcement to investigate. Drone operators that violate restricted airspace can face substantial fines and even lose their license or have their drones confiscated. The death and destruction drones have caused on the battlefields of the Ukraine and Iran wars has officials increasingly concerned about the threat drones pose. Sometimes an initial report from an airline pilot about a close encounter with a drone doesn't always turn out to be an actual collision after officials investigate. In April, the FAA was able to determine that a drone passed roughly 1,000 feet (305 meters) below a United Airlines plane as it came into San Diego and did not strike the plane.

Inmates Take Control Of North Carolina Jail After Overpowering Correctional Staff

WINDSOR, N.C. (AP) — Inmates seized control of parts of a regional jail in eastern North Carolina on Monday after overpowering correctional staff, authorities said. Three guards and 88 inmates were inside the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor when the takeover occurred at about 5 a.m., prompting an immediate response from local, state and federal authorities, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a statement posted on social media. There was no immediate threat to the general public, Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said in the statement. Windsor is about 120 miles (190 kilometers) east of Raleigh. Inmates took two guards captive and the third guard escaped. Negotiations led to the release of 18 inmates and the two guards at about 9:30 a.m., the statement said. Another large group of inmates was released a short time later. The statement said the two guards were released “without further injury,” but did not elaborate. Authorities have not specified how many people remain inside the facility. Jail administrators and multiple law enforcement agencies were working toward a quick, peaceful resolution and restoration of full control of the jail. “Our top priority is the safety of our staff, inmates, and the surrounding community,” Ruffin said. A secure perimeter was established around the detention center and the public was asked to avoid the immediate area, Ruffin said.

One Killed In Shooting At Site Of California World Cup Fan Zone

SAN JOSE, California, June 28 (Reuters) - One person was killed and another seriously injured on Sunday in a shooting at a popular entertainment spot in San Jose, California, that has been hosting a World Cup "fan zone" screening matches, police said. There were no World Cup games being screened at the time of the shooting, with the only match of the day in the tournament finishing around 2 p.m. local time (2100 GMT). "One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries," San Jose police said in a post on social media platform X. "This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets are closed in the area." The incident occurred at San Pedro Square, one of several places in the San Francisco Bay Area where huge crowds have gathered for lively "watch parties" showing World Cup matches on big screens. The Bay Area has hosted five World Cup matches so far, with the last game a knockout match on Wednesday between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States. A Reuters journalist at the scene saw a heavy police presence, multiple police vehicles and a person on a stretcher partially covered by a white sheet being rushed away from the area by people in uniforms. The scene was cordoned off and most bars in the area were closed after the incident. A security guard, who declined to be named because she was not authorised to speak to media, said she saw the injured person in distress. "The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back," she said. "Police were talking to security and a couple of witnesses." There are several dozen fan zones across the Bay Area.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is rejecting a push by President Donald Trump to throw out a jury’s $5 million finding that he sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York City department store in the mid-1990s and later defamed her. Trump’s lawyers had challenged the judge’s decision to allow testimony from two other women who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago, allegations the Republican president has denied. Carroll’s lawyers urged the justices to pass on the case, arguing the lower-court decisions were in line with others around the country. The decision comes about two years after the court granted Trump broad immunity from criminal prosecution.
