Aug 3 (Reuters) - Two deaths have been identified as part of a cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting Michigan, the state's health department said on Monday. Both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration, according to medical records. No additional information will be provided on these two cases, the department said. Cyclosporiasis is generally not a life-threatening illness. Death resulting from cyclosporiasis is uncommon in the United States. Cases of the intestinal infection caused by the cyclospora parasite, which can cause diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, have risen steadily across the United States in recent months, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Michigan health officials reported 11,234 cases linked to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an increase of 461 cases since its last update on Friday. The outbreak in Michigan has resulted in 193 hospitalizations, as of July 30, the state health department's latest update said. Nationwide, the CDC has recorded 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis as of July 28, with more than 11,500 additional suspected cases still awaiting confirmation or further investigation. The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine what led a 24-year-old man to open fire at an Idaho fast-food restaurant over the weekend, in an attack that left three people dead and seven others wounded before authorities say he killed himself. Police Chief Matthew Hicks said Sunday that investigators are confident that the gunman, identified as Chad Williams, acted alone in the shooting Saturday at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls. Hicks says an off-duty state trooper and a civilian fired on the attacker and diverted him from the restaurant. He also says Williams’ family is cooperating fully with the investigation.

“Today” show host Savannah Guthrie said her family was “desperate” and “begging for help" in the disappearance of her mother. The emotional plea Saturday on her Instagram account came a day after authorities released an early ransom note in the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. A second note that was also released Friday said Guthrie died shortly after she was kidnapped and “is buried in nature now.” Both notes initially were sent to a Tucson television station days after Guthrie's 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing from her home outside Tucson on Feb. 1. Authorities have not said whether Nancy Guthrie is still alive.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that the Department of Homeland Security can proceed with building a border wall through a levee system in a small Texas town. This decision supports the Trump administration’s efforts to construct a $46 billion wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The town of Presidio, with about 3,200 residents, argued the wall could cause flooding and that legal procedures were not followed. DHS has waived many regulations to speed up construction, and claims it has the authority to bypass the rules. The town’s development district said Monday it was “very disappointed that the court will allow this potentially disastrous construction to continue” but that it remains "committed to protecting the Big Bend area and those who rely on the threatened levees.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says newly planned talks with Tehran are the “last chance” for Iran to forge a deal and avoid an escalation of U.S. strikes on the country. Trump speaking Monday at the Oval Office said he expects negotiations that will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create a pathway for Iran to address United States’ concerns about it’s nuclear program will begin in the next day or two. The Republican president says, “The first phase is the opening of the straits. The second phase will be the denuclearization.” Trump says that ”will take a little while.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Key senators have unveiled a short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown during the middle of campaign season. The bill unveiled Sunday would keep federal agencies funded past the midterm elections, through Dec. 11. The Senate is likely to vote on the measure before leaving Washington at the end of the week for its traditional August recess. Many lawmakers want to spend the coming weeks shoring up their reelection prospects rather than working in the nation’s capital. By extending government funding now, lawmakers can use the ensuing months to work out their differences on funding for the full year.

Michigan has joined Minnesota in reporting cyberattacks on water systems but an official said all were operating “safely.” Earlier this week, authorities said cyberattacks targeted over 30 water systems in Minnesota. The source of the attacks is being investigated, but they came amid warnings that Iranian hackers have been focused on such systems. Minnesota IT Services said Thursday that the investigation into the attacks that happened on Sunday and Monday was continuing, and that state officials had not identified who was behind them. There were no reports that residents had been impacted by the attacks.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Light winds and lower temperatures are in the forecast to help firefighters with wildfires in eastern Washington state that have forced the evacuation of 60,000 people in the Spokane area. The fires have destroyed at least 600 homes, businesses and other structures. The fires have burned more than 12.5 square miles around Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, and officials said Sunday that 390 square miles have burned across the state. They’ve been among dozens of fires across the Western U.S. No deaths have yet been reported from the fires in the Spokane area.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur is being treated for non-life threatening injuries after a car accident in Toledo. Her office said Kaptur, who's 80, was a passenger in a vehicle headed to a church service Sunday “when the car she was traveling in was struck." Her office said the congresswoman is active, alert and “looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon." The House is on its summer recess, so she was not expected in Washington this week.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has moved to dismiss a criminal case charging a former Olympian with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Government lawyers said in a 20-page court filing Friday evening that information provided since the indictment of David Hearn shows that the damage was the result of a “flawed installation by the contractor” as well as “the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026.” Hearn’s lawyers say the case against him should never have been brought.
